
Lady Starlight, a performance artist, met Gaga at this period. Gaga was signed to Streamline Records by Vince Herbert in 2007, after a performance at Lollapalooza Festival 2007. Gaga signed a music publishing contract with Sony/ATV following her time as an apprentice to a songwriter for Famous Music Publishing. She was then hired to compose songs for the support of Britney Spears and labelmates New Kids on the Block and Fergie. At Interscope, singer-songwriter Akon recognized her vocal abilities when she sang a reference vocal for one of his tracks in studio; Akon then convinced Interscope-Geffen-A&M Chairman and CEO Jimmy Iovine to form a joint deal by having her also sign with his own label Kon Live, making her his "franchise player. In 2008, Gaga released her first album 'The Fame' which received little radio attention. Gaga was on tour throughout Europe and in gay clubs across the US to advertise the album. However, it was not until her hit single "Just Dance" came into the attention of the public in 2009 that Gaga made waves on the music scene. Gaga was suffering from a laceration to the labrum in her right hip. She had been keeping it under wraps for several weeks in order that she could go on tour. She was unable walk following a performance in Toronto and was in severe pain. The tour was cancelled.
